Summer break is upon us, but learning doesn't have to take a vacation! Our Early Learning Multnomah team is committed to supporting this community's youngest learners throughout the year. This year, they've created culturally and linguistically specific "Transition to Summer" kits for 700 Preschool Promise students.
These kits are jam-packed with fun and educational activities designed to help preschoolers maintain and build upon the knowledge they gained throughout the school year. This prevents the "summer slide" phenomenon, where students lose some academic skills during the break.
Collaboration is Key
The kits are a testament to the power of community collaboration. Preschool teachers laid the groundwork by fostering a strong foundation of knowledge in their students. Hands on Greater Portland volunteers assembled the kits, ensuring each child receives engaging materials. Local UPS heroes then stepped up to deliver the kits directly to 20 preschools and school districts across the county.
An extra special touch? Each kit includes a children's book and a corresponding parent guide from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This duo empowers families to introduce financial literacy concepts to their young learners in a fun and accessible way.
Preschool Promise: Investing in Our Future
Early Learning Multnomah oversees the county's Preschool Promise program, providing free, culturally-responsive preschool to over 700 students. These "Transition to Summer" kits are just one way they ensure these young learners continue to thrive throughout the year. By working together, local organizations, businesses and volunteers are equipping Multnomah County's youngest minds for success.
