On Saturday, Dec. 14th families across Washington County gathered at Lincoln Street Elementary in Hillsboro for a day filled with discovery, creativity, and hands-on exploration. The event, aptly named STEAM Kids Wonderland, provided an opportunity for children to dive into the exciting realms of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM).
Hosted by United Way of the Columbia-Willamette’s Early Learning Washington County team, the event aimed to equip parents and children with tools and knowledge to pursue educational opportunities beyond the classroom. Packed with interactive activities, it was a day designed to inspire curiosity and foster a love for learning.
Hands-On Learning, One Experiment at a Time
STEAM Kids Wonderland featured a variety of engaging activities tailored to spark young imaginations. From building active volcano dioramas that demonstrated real-life chemical reactions to experimenting with simple materials easily found at home, children and parents alike discovered the joy of learning through play.
Luis, a program volunteer, explained the importance of making STEAM concepts accessible: “We started developing these activities to share knowledge with families and children. The goal is to work with parents to show them how easy it is to do STEM activities at home, using materials they likely already have.”
This approach resonated deeply with the families who attended. Maggie, a parent, shared her excitement: “I really enjoy the interactiveness from the teachers. They’re so helpful at explaining things, teaching new words, and showing kids how to work together as a team. Learning about science is so important for children.”
A Community Effort for Future Leaders
The event wasn’t just about the kids. Volunteers also found joy and inspiration in helping shape young minds. For JD, another program volunteer, the experience was about more than just fun: “I really think these kids are the future of our community and our nation. By creating a positive and engaging learning opportunity, we’re setting them up for success in whatever they choose to pursue.”
Beyond the hands-on activities, the event served as a platform for parents to explore additional educational resources and opportunities. Through these efforts, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette continues its mission of creating equitable access to learning for all families in the region.
Building a Lifelong Love for Learning
STEAM Kids Wonderland highlighted the importance of engaging families in educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom. By empowering parents with simple, effective tools for fostering curiosity at home, events like this pave the way for lifelong learning and success.
For those who attended, it was a day filled with laughter, discovery, and connection. And for the community, it’s a reminder of the power of coming together to inspire the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and creators.
As one parent put it: “It’s a win-win.”
